What are Movable Tiny Homes?

A Movable Tiny House (MTH) is a factory-built and transportable accessory structure (between 150 sq.ft. to 400 sq.ft.) located on the backyard of a residential lot (where allowed by local City ordinances) that provides living facilities for one or more persons, independent of the primary dwelling unit, which includes permanent provisions for living, sleeping, eating, cooking and sanitation.

MTHs must be manufactured to comply with the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1192 Standards on Recreational Vehicles and the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) A119.5 Park Model Recreational Vehicle Standards.

Municipalities that approve MTHs to be considered as Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs) for permanent housing purposes require an approved 3rd party Inspection Agency, such as CA State approved Design Approval Agency or Quality Assurance Agency, to approve and certify the manufacturer’s Quality Control Manual, Materials List, CA Licensed Architectural / CA Licensed Structural Engineer’s stamped plot/site plans prior to the MTH being licensed and registered with the California DMV.
